Within the Field-Bred community, certain "types" of the breed seem to regionalize. Perhaps it happens because of shared personal preferences, perhaps because common breeding stock is utilized; perhaps it reflects the need brought on by local hunting conditions. At the end of the last century Dennis Smith developed his own line of springers; a line known as "Smythwicks".
As a matter of definition a "Smythwick Springer" includes offspring between the foundation stock utilized by Dennis Smith
in his breeding program, and subsequent breedings within that line (or to those closely related to the foundation stock).
For instance, progeny of Buddy x Millie fall in with the "Smythwicks" type for the purposes of linebreeding because even though
Dennis never planned a breeding between these two, he utilized BOTH in his breeding program.
Whether or not the name contains "Smythwicks" is incidental. These offspring will be important in subsequent linebreedings.
Understandably, many of these dogs are also prominent in many other lines. We respect and honor the work of those breeders. Some information on those lines is shown on this website. For certain, the work of Ruth & Charles Greening (Ru-Char) has left its indelible stamp on Springers worldwide. A COI analysis of Smythwicks offspring shows a predominance of Buddy, Junior, Bess, and Streak, in that order, with each dog showing linebreeding back to at least two, and often more, of these ancestors. Welcome to these pages which document and explore the "Smythwicks Spaniels".
